Makeup Products That REALLY Didn’t Work For Me

Today I want to talk about 5 makeup products that really did not work for me. I’m usually pretty positive on my blog and only really post about products I actually like but today? I’m in a pretty bad mood so I need to moan about something.

I am a total makeup hoarder. And I do need to clear some stuff out but I’m also forgiving and like to give everything/one a second chance (that usually backfires, as I’ve learnt in the past couple of days). It fills me with joy if I can make something work for me after some good ol’ perseverance.

Some of these products are new and total no nos. Some are older and things I’ve tried to love. One of the products is even something I really like but just does not like my skin. But they are all products I don’t really reach for and really should get rid of them.

My five items are as followed:

  • The Ordinary Coverage Foundation
  • Maybelline Eraser Eye Concealer
  • NYX Smokey Eye Palette
  • ELF Aqua Primer Mist
  • Artist Couture Supernova Diamond Glow Powder

Wow. Controversial. Some of those items are things huge influencers RAVE about so how on earth can I not like them??? Well, most items I buy have been influenced by some of the YouTubers I watch and bloggers I follow. Somethings I buy off my own back to try but I am more likely to try them if they have some good reviews.

What I often forget is that not everyone has the same skin so not everything is going to work as well for me, as it does for the influencers with perfect skin.

Oh, and studio lights make everything look great.

Now, some of these brands I love other products. Like, I love my NYX Liquid Suede Lipsticks and eyeliners and I adore my Maybelline Mascaras. But these products are just odd products I did not get on with. It doesn’t mean I dislike the whole brand!!

ELF Aqua Primer Mist

This was my first ever spray primer and I wanted to get on with it so I didn’t have to buy the MAC Fix +, which has now become a firm favourite setting spray. But I found it pricey for how much product you get considering how much product you use in one application.

If that makes sense.

It has such a violent spray and with only 30ml for £9, it seems much more economical to buy Fix + for £18 for 100ml.

This primer didn’t make my makeup last longer and it’s just very wet. It’s like spraying water on my face rather than a light mist and I am not here for it.

Maybelline Eraser Eye Concealer

I bought this purely because Tati, Jeffree Star, Laura Lee… all those big influencers hyped it up so much that I wanted to try it. I bought it last year in my huge Superdrug haul and used it a couple of times, initially liked it but found a number of flaws.

First is the HORRIBLE sponge applicator.

You end up wasting half the product because it absorbs into the sponge and it’s so awkward to then apply the product to your face. It’s probably the only product I own that gets messy but I can’t keep it clean!

And I found it too yellow and dark for my skin. It just doesn’t work for me at all and I don’t understand the hype at all.

The Ordinary Coverage Foundation

I wanted to love this product and on my skin it’s a gorgeous foundation. But it breaks me out big time! I don’t know if it clogs my pores or doesn’t agree with my skin but the day after using it, I get huge break outs.

It is a nice foundation that lasts me all day and doesn’t get oily or cakey. Yes, it’s not as full coverage as I would like but I don’t like sacrificing my skin just to use this foundation. For me, it’s not worth it at all.

NYX Smokey Eye Palette

I bought this for prom and apart from initially swatching the blue (which was the only shade I needed) I never used it again. It’s a disappointing palette from NYX because I have some other of their eyeshadows and they’re well pigmented and smooth. But these are really dull colours and feel rather chalky.

For me, I can’t really create an eye look with this palette. It ends up being a muddy mess of eye shadow that does not look pretty at all, let alone something I’d wear out. The concept of these little palettes are great and I think they have a few different themes but this one is a let down and it’s a shame because I love NYX so much!

Artist Couture Diamond Glow Powder

I was gifted this product by Beauty Bay so I feel a little awful saying this but this product really is not for me! Maybe had I been sent a different colour, I’d have been fine but any colour highlighters on my light skin? Doesn’t work.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a BLINDING highlighter and you only need very little to go a long way but pink with a purple shift doesn’t work with me being so pasty! I’d love to try a different colour but it’s a lot of money to potentially not like a product and I don’t really like the whole concept of a loose highlighter. I feel like there’s so much room to over highlight and ruin a look.

Do you have any products that really don’t work for you? Let me know!
