I think we can all agree that the Instagram algorithm is a pain in the backside, right?
Well, I can agree. But recently, I’ve seen my Instagram grow quite considerably compared to other months and wanted to share some tips that I think have helped me.
As I say with every post where I give tips, I’m not an expert on Instagram and I’m not saying that these tips are going to work for you. But these things did help me gain followers and engagement. That’s the key bit. Engagement.
I try to post daily. This seems like a lot but it definitely helps. For me, staying active has helped me gain followers. Usually, I gain between 3-6 followers per post and the more I post, the more I gain. People want to see activity in their feed. I tend to follow people who are active.
You might just take a photo of your makeup, what you’ve eaten, where you’ve gone. Just something to keep your feed alive. It does make a difference and before going any further with this post, I need to stress that gaining is not easy. You need to put in effort to see results.

Post Engaging Captions
Instagram is a SOCIAL platform. You wouldn’t just ignore your followers on Twitter or not try to engage with them so why do it on Instagram? I see so many comments that aren’t engaging and don’t have comments underneath them. But on the other hand, I see comments that have questions in and there’s plenty of comments underneath.
I find that the posts that I have a caption that prompts a conversation on do a lot better. Tell people what you’re doing with your day and ask them what they’re doing. Post about your favourite food and ask people what their favourite food is.
And then make sure you reply to comments if they warrant a response! Let the people who follow you see that you’re thankful for their support and treasure the captions they give. It goes a long way, believe me!
Try To Have Some Sort Of ‘Theme’
I put theme in inverted commas because sticking to a strict theme can take the fun out of using Instagram.
By theme, I mean have a common factor between your images that ties them all together to create a cohesive feed. For example, I filter all my photos with a slight pink hue but some people have a colour theme for seasons or only post on a certain backdrop.

Use Hashtags But Don’t Spam
Hashtags are a way to connect with people who don’t follow you but like the content you post. Using hashtags is your way to end up on their feeds.
I use between 20-30 RELEVANT hashtags per post in order to connect with my audience. The key word here is relevant.
People who engage with football content won’t want to see lipsticks on their feed. Yes, more people may be searching for football around the time of the World Cup so you’ll get more views but football fans aren’t likely to engage with your post.
You also want to try and use hashtags that aren’t over saturated but are still popular. Before you post, search up some tags you want to use and see how many people use that tag. You don’t want to post and then have 50 other people post at the same time as you, using the same tag, because your content will just get lost and not engaged with.
The #bloggershare tag on Instagram has helped me a lot with my engagement and with gaining followers. Definitely use it, follow the tag and like other people’s posts using the tag.
Don’t Be Afraid To Promote
There’s no shame in promoting your content and accounts. I know some people think that if you constantly push for followers then you only care about the numbers but I think the truth behind that statement depends on the individual.
For me, I push hard because I am proud of my content and I work hard. Of course I want as many people as possible to see it. If that’s your intention then have no shame in promoting and pushing your content. If you just want to see a big number in your follower count? Then you need to reassess why you’re using social media.
I tweet about my goals fairly frequently. I post screenshots of my feed and follower count and say how close I am. Also make sure to thank people when you get to your goals. Let people know you’re grateful.

Use Instagram Pods
This one can be touchy with the blogging community so use it if you agree with it.
Instagram pods are basically group chats with other bloggers where you post your photos to get likes and comments and in return, you engage with other people’s content. Some people see it as cheating but personally, I don’t see the harm because it’s real people, real engagement and not just bots.
Through these pods, you might end up following new bloggers and actually making some friends. I know that I’ve made some friends through pods!
And those are the tips that have helped me! As I said, they may not work for you but they worked for me so why not share them in the hope they do help?
