Before I had my surgery, I said on my Twitter that I would be buying some more SFX supplies so that after my surgery I could properly start practicing my SFX.
Since my surgery went so well, I ordered a load of SFX products from Guru Makeup Emporium in London so I could make a head start on finally enhancing my SFX skills. I bought a mixture of items so I had a range of things to play about with – I’m not just wanting to focus on making cuts.
If you didn’t know, I enjoy SFX makeup and you can find examples of my work on my blog and my Adobe Portfolio. I’m not the most experienced SFX artist and I’m entirely self taught but I want to be better. It’s the first thing that I’ve actually stuck with as a hobby and for me, that’s a big deal.
For a long time, I’ve only had the bare bones of a kit. Some latex, cotton, scar wax and some paints. But as you can imagine, that does limit the imagination a little bit. So I bought myself a load of new items to hopefully make some even more creative things.
Ben Nye Natural Set Face Powder
I have a lot of setting powders but I wanted something separate for my SFX. I already use my Makeup Revolution Banana Powder but it’s not neutral enough and adds too much warmth to latex (which already dries yellow). A lot of people really like Ben Nye powders so naturally, I had to give them a go!
Pros Aide Adhesive
Ben Nye Fresh Scab
Ugh, for how long have I been waiting to buy this!!?? I already had some cheap bloods you can buy in fancy dress stores but wanted something that didn’t just dry to a brown stain. This stays juicy and fresh looking and it’s slightly chunky when applied to give the effect of…well, scabs.
Despite being excited to buy this, I’ve still not tried it yet! That is because I’m so scared of actually scarring my skin. Collodion puckers the skin to create fake scars but I’m worried about not removing it correctly… definitely need to do some research!
Maekup by David Stoneman Pus
Yup, I bought a tub of pus. It is a bit like the putty you can get in plastic tubs that makes farting noise when your stick your finger in it. It’s kinda gloopy but actually looks pretty realistic so I’ve definitely already grossed some people out!
Mr Dashbo Autopsy Palette
For some reason, I’ve always wanted an alcohol activated paint palette. I have cream paints and water activated paints but alcohol activated paints have always appealed to me for lighter washes of colour and changing up skin tones. The autopsy palette is definitely the palette for me so I can easily create looks that scream death.
Ben Nye Master Bruise Wheel
As much as I love my Snazaroo paints, I wanted some deeper colours that are actually meant to look like bruises. It’s taking a while to get used to using cream paints but creating bruises has never been easier!
Alcone 3rd Degree Silicone
3rd Degree is another popular choice for making cuts and wounds and as I’m someone who likes a challenge, I picked some up in my order. It is definitely something I need to work on but there’s time! Was slightly disappointed at how small the pots were though!
Ben Nye Black Tooth Enamel
Ben Nye Brush Cleaner
I’ve been in desperate need of a better brush cleaner that can help me wash my brushes faster than the normal soap and water business. It seems this one is more geared towards artists working on set who need to clean their brushes quickly so this could be exactly what I need!
I bought my first ever BeautyBlender! I’ve used it once and definitely saw an improvement with how my makeup applies. It went on a lot smoother and less streaky so dammit, the hype was definitely justified.
Ben Nye Thick Blood
I bought two types of bloods just to keep it spicy and only bought a little tub of this to try it out. It’s very similar to Fresh Scab which is slightly disappointing but I guess when I start using them both more, I’ll learn the best applications for both!
Maekup By David Stoneman Blood Stain Remover Gel
I really don’t enjoy going into work with red stains on my face the morning after messing around with SFX makeup so I figured this product will probably save my life on a few occasions and yep, I can say it certainly has.
If you would like to see me do some more SFX content then let me know! Let me know what you’d like to see!
Lots of Love,
